At the 75th Annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show held in March this year, there were 2 outstanding floral arrangements that were captivating. They were both made by the same floral designer, Hetty Shurtleff, of Santa Barbara.
We are fortunate to have Hetty as our first speaker of the year. Before our eyes, she will create a number of orchid floral masterpieces of which 3 will be raffled off. Since the Santa Barbara show is the oldest, largest and most prestigious orchid show in the US, we have one of the best orchid floral designers in the United States as our speaker.
Hetty Schurtleff is a member of Las Florinas, a Santa Barbara Floral Design Club, the Sogetsu School of Ikebana International and the Rose Society. She has taught floral arrangement at Santa Barbara’s Center for Lifetime Learning.
Report from the meeting…
by Susan Harris
Hetty Schurtleff was the first speaker for the 61st year of the Malibu Garden Club. She is a talented floral designed and presented two outstanding arrangements this year at Santa Barbara’s International Orchid Show. She also specializes in unique floral arrangements using roses and succulents as well as orchids.
Hetty created several beautiful orchid arrangements using different types of orchids and a variety of containers and structural elements. Three of the arrangements were raffled off to the garden club members. One unique arrangement was using a whole, uncut pumpkin as a base for the exhibit to augment our fall theme. This is an example of how she uses atypical structural elements to display flowers.
She spent time answering questions from the members about special products that she uses in her floral displays. She had an exhibit of floral and plant adhesives that she recommends and uses to create her designs and where they could be purchased. She also gave a tutorial on how to keep arrangements and flowers fresh over a period of several days.
