Let’s take a step back in time. It was back in the 20s, the time of the Charleston and the flapper girls , when William Randolph Hearst built a beach mansion in Santa Monica for his mistress Marion Davies who was a showgirl and actress. Hearst and Davies entertained luminaries from Hollywood such as Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, and other stars of the day at this beach house.

We are going to tour this historic beach house as it exists today (it is called Annenberg Community Beach House) and then have lunch at Back to the Beach Cafe as follows:

Time: 11:45 AM
Place: 415 Pacific Coast Highway , Santa Monica
Directions: Take Pacific Coast Highway past Chautauqua and Santa Monica Bay Club to a stoplight and a sign on your right that says Annenberg Community Beach House. Turn right into that parking lot and park and pay a small fee, Follow the signs to the entrance of the Beach House where a tour guide will meet us. The tour is from 12 to 2 and only 25 people are allowed on the tour. We suggest carpooling if you can.

Lunch

After the tour, walk across the parking lot towards the beach to the iconic Back to the Beach Cafe. Their food is fabulous and they are located right on the beach. We will be seated inside their dining room. We will have a fixed price menu of $30 dutch treat which includes your choice of one of these four entrees as follows:

Chicken Apple Salad
Back on the Beach Burger
Salmon Burger
Grilled Fish Taco

Plus, a nonalcoholic drink, a cookie tray selection, and tax and tip.

Because the tour is limited to 25 people, the first 25 members who respond to this email to me by text or email will be eligible for this event. Only members of the Malibu Garden Club can attend.

Annenberg Beach House Review

If only these walls could talk. These walls did talk to the Malibu Garden Club through the many naughty and nice stories of what went on here as told by the Annenberg Beach House docents It was like being a fly in the room on the wall where it happened. The 100 room beach mansion built by William Randolph Hearst for his mistress Marion Davies in the 1920s became the place for many parties. In fact, this was party central for the Hollywood elite.

After the entertaining tours given by the docents, we walked over to the Back on the Beach Cafe . We had our choice of grilled fish tacos, salmon, burger, black bean mushroom burger, back on the beach. burger or chicken apple goat, cheese salad. Any one of them was delicious and delectable.

New Year's Day Party

The Malibu Garden Club will host a New Year’s Day Party, January 1, 2024 at Glen and Terry Gessford’s house from 1:30 to 4:00 PM. We will be serving hors d’oeuvres and lunch.

Malibu Garden Club members enjoyed a spectacularly beautiful warm day for the New Year’s Day Party. Someone said It was like sitting on top of the world looking across the valley to the Channel Islands. The American Beauty Jade hedges and Agave Fox Tails were in full bloom we’re in the foreground. The Club. which now has over 60 members, showed up in force to enjoy a catered lunch from Spruzzos and a garden tour lead by host Terry Gessford. The Beet Salad was the Club Favorite followed by the Chocolate Chip Cake made by Yvonne Gelbman. Thank you Yvonne. Also, thanks to our Hospitality Committee of Cory Buckner, and Judy Graham-Bell who prepared new easy to read name tags. Amy Wang brought some delicious Chinese tea eggs. Some photos of the party are attached.

Coming events of the Malibu Garden Club include a February trip to the Annenberg House and lunch at the beach restaurant. On March 23,a gathering will be hosted by Tom and Stephanie Loo and neighbors, Bill and Carol Powell. Tom has a beautiful, rose garden you don’t want to miss .

At the Getty Villa, the flowers are blooming and the gardens and works of art are spectacular. Members of the Malibu Garden Club will visit the Getty Villa on Thursday, March 23rd at 11:30 a.m. at the Getty Villa Cafe for lunch (dutch treat). The Cafe serves casual Mediterranean-inspired fare made with fresh, local ingredients including organic produce whenever possible. We will eat on the terrace overlooking the ocean and Villa. At 12:30 p.m., we will be given a guided tour of the gardens. Meet near the Museum Store entrance. You may bring a guest.

The high tea party held by the Malibu Garden Club was a great success.

We want to thank Joan and Tiffany Murray for hosting the event at their beautiful house and gardens. The four kinds of tea and little petit four and finger sandwiches were exquisite.

The garden tour led by Tiffany Murray was very much a beautiful walk in the park. The Murray’s have made many improvements to their gardens since the Woolsey fire. Thank heavens, their house was not burned down as was their neighbors.

There were 40 members who enjoyed the afternoon together. A few pictures of the event are below.

Hope to see you all at our next event on December 22 at the Adamson House in Malibu with lunch at The Farm on the Malibu Pier.

Join the Malibu Garden Club as we go Blueberry picking at Gerry Ranch in Camarillo. Situated on top of a hill overlooking a valley of lemon and avocado trees, fresh, tasty, luscious organic blueberries full of antioxidants are growing. Plants grow in 8-gallon pots arranged in neat, elevated rows convenient for waist-high picking under shade cloth. Picking buckets are provided and a golf cart will whisk you from the parking area to the top of the hill.

For this members-only field trip, we’ll visit the Getty Villa, who has an exceptional one-time exhibit of 2000-year-old bronze and marble statues which have never been out of Italy before. These exquisite statues were used in Roman gardens as attractive focal points of interest. The exhibit is called Buried by Vesuvius, Treasures from the Villa Dei Papiri and closes 10/28/19.

The Malibu Garden Club is excited to have Laura Taylor at our August meeting. Laura spoke about tomatoes. We found out how the season was progressing and then indulged in some tomato recipes, including Tomato/Cucumber Salsa, a traditional Tuscan Panzanella (bread and tomato salad) and her Signature Gazpacho. Of course, everyone took recipes home with them!
